Message society. If the drivers weren't doing an illegal street race, then the crowd would not have gathered in the street for the CV driver to hit. But why stop there? Why not sue the parents of these drivers for frumping up these kids in the first place? Where does it stop? There's definitely a deep-pockets approach to this. I'm sure Ford will be sued for not offering automatic headlights (assuming the driver didn't have his lights on), or some other pedestrian avoidance type of technology.

I don't expect the charges to fully stick - either a plea-bargain will be struck or if they get a good lawyer, it will be thrown out all together. I agree with the other comments to this effect. I also believe there is a message that the DA and the law enforcement agency are trying to get across as well. Even if the charges don't stick, the jail-time and lawyer's fees alone will be enough to set back the street racers quite a bit.
